The Mermaid Triathlon

June 16, 2008

We did it! We may have only done 1 part each but we did it! I read somewhere that less than 5% of the population will ever compete in a triathlon. I can’t believe that. The one we did was only for women and its called Mermaid TRI. I understand that its a much less competitive atmosphere than most. It was a sprint triathlon so each of the legs was shorter but, you gotta start somewhere. Its amazing to be there and see all these women doing something for themselves! Don’t mistake me for a feminist but I have to give credit where credit is due. There were women out there that you would never imagine doing this kind of thing. That just shows that as long as you have heart, you CAN do it. Its nice to know that you don’t have to have an iron body to have the feeling of being a winner. I can say this since I am no where near an iron body!

Our time was 1hour 29 minutes and 58 seconds! I am very proud of myself and my teammates(who just happen to be my mom and my best friend)! I rode my butt off and finished the 11 miles in 44 minutes. Not to toot my own horn but thats amazing! Thats an average of 15 miles per hour. On a bicycle! A mountain bike none the less. The reason thats a feat is mountain bike weigh more that a road bike and the tires are fatter creating more drag.

My friend and I (her name is Nichole) are going to work ourselves silly to be able to do the entire tri on our own. I may drown in the process but what can you do. My mom (who recently lost 100lbs.) does these by herself usually. Two weekends before she did an Olympic triathlon which is amazing. It is something like a 1.25K swim, 40K bike and a 10K run. It was her first of that size and I was so proud out there cheering her on. My mom and I have never shared activities like this. I ran with her for the first time in my life a couple weeks ago. The most strenuous thing we had ever done together was hiking. Thats not really a sport.

For all of you out there who have ever said “I am so out of shape” it doesn’t matter. You can still do it if you “tri”!
